Patient Care Assistant (PCA) - Multiple Openings
About the role
We are currently hiring for multiple positions at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Positions include PRN opportunities across various shifts, including day shift 7am – 7pm and night shift 7pm – 7am. Candidates with qualifications exceeding the minimum requirements will be considered for higher-level roles based on experience, additional job requirements, and business needs. Depending on education, experience, and skill level, a variety of job opportunities may be available, including Patient Care Assistant (PCA), Unit Admin Assistant, and PCA Specialist.
Responsibilities
- Function as a novice to competent PCA, demonstrating basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately and carry out delegated nursing assistant level tasks for assigned age-specific, diverse patient population.
- Assist in the delivery of patient care and services under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Conduct hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met and record data established by policy and procedure, reporting observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse.
- Perform basic patient care activities of daily living (ADLs) within unit-specific defined limits and job scope, such as assistance with patient elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and progress activity.
- Practice Patient and Family Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist ICARE values.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent education.
- Completion of one of the following: PCA externship, PCA internal internship, or six months of direct patient care experience.
- Enrolled in a school of nursing program with a completed first clinical rotation.
- Required BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association certification.
Qualifications

- Licenses and Certifications: Required BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) - American Heart Association certification.
Skills
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
- Ability to assist with maintaining, cleaning, and stocking of equipment and supplies as established on assigned unit.
- Ability to organize the workflow, problem-solve basic and routine matters, and manage multiple ongoing priorities, seeking guidance and assistance from preceptor, licensed nurse, or management.
- Ability to provide contributions towards improving department scores for employee engagement, patient satisfaction, quality/safety, and growth/innovation.
