About the role

The Patient Access Specialist serves as a liaison between patients/families, payers, Patient Financial Services, and other healthcare team members. This role facilitates patient tracking and billing by obtaining and verifying accurate demographic information, financially securing accounts, and collecting out-of-pocket responsibility to maximize hospital reimbursement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with EMTALA, DNV, HIPAA, and all other hospital and government regulations applicable to admissions and medical records.
  • Provide excellent customer service by understanding and meeting customer needs and building quality relationships.
  • Ensure patient safety by properly identifying and triaging patients upon arrival.
  • Answer telephones professionally, record messages, and communicate with appropriate medical staff.
  • Obtain and verify signatures on required forms and consents.
  • Collect, verify, and enter complete and accurate demographic information for all accounts to facilitate revenue cycle processing.
  • Verify insurance benefits for all plans, confirming correct payor and plan details in the patient accounting system.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations as required by individual insurance plans.
  • Maximize collection efficiency by pursuing collections at the time of service in a customer service-oriented manner.
  • Scan registration and clinical documentation into the system and maintain medical records.
  • Coordinate patient transfers to other hospitals when necessary.
  • Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians, and hospitals.
  • Maintain cash drawer, patient logs, payments received, transfers, and admissions according to policies.
  • Maintain visitor/vendor logs.
  • Maintain a clean working environment, including front desk, restrooms, waiting areas, and patient rooms.
  • Receive and forward deliveries, including mail, to appropriate departments.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment or maintenance needs to the appropriate contact.
  • Attend staff meetings and other company-sponsored or mandated meetings.
  • Assist medical staff as needed and perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • 2 years of patient registration and insurance verification experience in a healthcare setting (preferred).
  • Emergency Department registration experience (strongly preferred).
  • Knowledge of various insurance plans (HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare, Medicaid) and payors (required).
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) (strongly preferred).
  • Fluency in English (written and oral communication) (required).
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish is required for the El Paso market.

For Pennsylvania candidates: Act 33 (Child Abuse History Clearance) and Act 73 (FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Clearance) must be completed within the last 5 years or obtained prior to the start date.

Schedule

Nights (7p-7a), PRN (as needed).
