Patient Access Spec - ED

About the role

The Emergency Department Access Specialist I is a hybrid position combining the Access Representative position and the Health Unit Coordinator position. The position includes rotating assignments within the Emergency Departments, such as triage, ED Zone Support, bedside registration, and EMS Desk.

Responsibilities

• Accurate patient identification in a highly stressful situation
• Collecting patient demographic information and regulatory consent forms at the bedside
• Verifying insurance and collecting copayments at the bedside
• Interacting effectively with external agencies like EMS, Law Enforcement, and Correction Facilities
• Managing the ED Patient Tracker and completing Access Specialist tasks
• Laboratory specimen verification and timely send to laboratory
• Ensuring EMTALA regulations are maintained during system downtimes

Requirements

• High School Diploma/G.E.D.
• Associate's Degree preferred
• 1-3 years in customer service experience, or a hospital or clinic setting
• Ability to keep composure in a high-stress environment
• Good judgement and ability to problem solve
• Ability to manage contained blood, urine, and other bodily fluids
• Ability to handle a multi-line telephone system
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time
