About the role
This position plays a crucial role in supporting departmental efficiencies within the hospital. Duties include patient registration, scheduling, and discharge processes. Responsibilities also involve explaining and securing patient forms, collecting patient financial liabilities, and verifying insurance and benefits.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients according to Conifer Standards of Care, providing exceptional customer service.
- Complete full patient registration at the time of service, adhering to financial and cash control policies.
- Explain and secure hospital and patient legal forms such as Advance Directives, Conditions of Services, Consent for Treatment, Important Messages from Medicare, EMTALA, etc.
- Scan and file patient information for upcoming hospital services.
- Assist with scheduling diagnostic procedures by entering data in the scheduling system and providing appointment instructions.
- Educate patients about their patient financial liabilities and employ proper, compliant patient liability collection techniques.
- Perform hospital cash reconciliations and secure payment entries in compliance with financial and cash control policies.
- Conduct medical necessity checks and verify insurance, benefits, and coverage.
- Obtain insurance authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled hospital services and secure inpatient visit notifications to payors.
- Assist with scheduling and coordinating post-discharge care for patients.
Requirements
- Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.
- Working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of a hospital environment.
- Excellent customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements.
- Understanding of Compliance standards.
- Ability to work in at least two Patient Access service areas, including the Emergency Department.
- Proficiency in using proper negotiation techniques to professionally collect money owed by patients/guarantors.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with both internal and external clients.
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards while maintaining Conifer Standards of Care.
Skills
- Minimum typing skills of 35 wpm.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer.
- Knowledge of function and relationships within a hospital environment preferred.
- Customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to receive and express detailed information through oral and written communications.
- Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements preferred.
- Understanding of Compliance standards preferred.
- Must be able to perform essential job duties in at least two Patient Access service areas including Emergency Department.
- Uses proper negotiation techniques to professionally collect money owed by our Patients/Guarantors.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with both internal and external Clients that lead to more effective communication and a higher level of productivity and accuracy.
- Must be able to appropriately interpret physician orders, medical terminology and insurance cards while maintaining Conifer Standards of Care.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 0 – 1 year in a Customer Service role.
- 0 – 1 year administrative experience in medical facility, health insurance, or related area preferred.
- Some college coursework is preferred.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
- Resolves Physician's office and Patient issues. May experience extreme patient volumes and uncooperative patients.
- Occasionally lift/carry items weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Frequent prolonged standing, sitting, and walking.
- Occasionally push a wheelchair to assist patients with mobility problems.

- Must be available to work hours and days as needed based on departmental/system demands.
