About the role

The Patient Access Representative is a key position at Mercy, serving as the initial point of contact for patients. They are responsible for facilitating all aspects of patient entry into Mercy facilities, including scheduling, registration, benefit verification, pre-certification, and financial clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate patient entrance into Mercy facilities
  • Schedule appointments and manage patient registrations
  • Verify patient insurance benefits and assist with pre-certification
  • Ensure accurate patient data is entered into the patient record
  • Work with insurance carriers and understand Medicare guidelines
  • Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and accreditation agency requirements

Requirements

  • 1-3 years clerical experience and customer service experience preferred
  • Experience with medical terminology and insurance plans preferred
  • High School diploma required; some college helpful
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with excellent telephone etiquette
  • Positive working relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and non-clinical hospital staff, and insurance companies
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with various computers systems, including 10-key calculators and computer keyboards
  • Prolonged standing and walking during each shift, along with the ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring gripping, reaching, bending, kneeling, twisting, and squatting

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates should possess a High School diploma and some college education. Preferred qualifications include 1-3 years of clerical experience and customer service experience, as well as experience with medical terminology and insurance plans. A strong attention to detail and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to work under stress, meet deadlines, and perform their duties with high accuracy.
