Patient Access Representative - ED
About the role
This role is based at Valley Baptist Harlingen, with rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Spanish language skills are required. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting departmental efficiencies, including scheduling, registration, patient pre-admission and admission, reception, and discharge functions.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients and provide world-class customer service
- Complete full patient registration at the date of service
- Adhere to financial and cash control policies and procedures
- Explain and secure hospital and patient legal forms
- Scan Protected Health Information and create patient information packets/folders
- Assist with scheduling diagnostic procedures and provide customer instructions
- Educate patients about patient financial liabilities and employ compliant patient liability collection techniques
- Perform hospital cash reconciliation and secure payment entry
- Verify insurance, benefits, coverage, and eligibility
- Obtain insurance authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled hospital services
- Secure inpatient visit notification to payors
- Assist with scheduling and coordinating post-discharge care for patients
Requirements
- Minimum typing skills of 35 wpm
- Demonstrated working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer
- Knowledge of function and relationships within a hospital environment (preferred)
- Customer service skills and experience
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to receive and express detailed information through oral and written communications
- Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements (preferred)
- Understanding of Compliance standards (preferred)
Qualifications
A High School Diploma or GED is required, with 0-1 year of experience in a customer service role and 0-1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related area (preferred). Some college coursework is also preferred.
Skills
- Ability to interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients
- Ability to use proper negotiation techniques to collect money owed by patients/guarantors
Physical Demands
The successful candidate must be able to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods, resolve physician's office and patient issues, and occasionally lift/carry items weighing up to 25 lbs. Frequent prolonged standing, sitting, and walking are also required.
Work Environment
The work environment is based in a hospital administration setting, with potential exposure to life-threatening patient conditions. The successful candidate must be able to work in patient care locations and be available to work hours and days as needed based on departmental/system demands.
