Pathology Assistant
About the role
Provides assistance to the Pathologist in the preparation, dissection, and completion of work with autopsy and surgical specimens.
Responsibilities
- Performs gross examination, description, and dissection of routine and complex surgical specimens according to established laboratory protocols.
- Affixes to or performs autopsies, including organ dissection, tissue preparation, and documentation of findings in collaboration with the Pathologist.
- Accurately documents specimen descriptions, dissection findings, and case information in the laboratory information system.
- Safeguards proper specimen handling, labeling, and workflow coordination to support timely and accurate case processing.
- Fulfills all laboratory safety, quality, regulatory, and compliance standards, including infection control and biohazard procedures.
- Participates in quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintains laboratory equipment, work areas, and inventory of supplies to support daily operations.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree from 4-year College or university plus 4 years related experience or combination of education and experience equal to 8 years.
- Certification as Pathology Assistant from NAACLS accredited training program will substitute for 2 years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Pathologists' Assistant Studies from a NAACLS-accredited program.
- Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA(ASCP)) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Previous experience performing gross examination and dissection of complex surgical specimens in a hospital or academic medical center.
- Experience assisting with or performing autopsy procedures.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and digital pathology workflows.
- Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and other applicable laboratory regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Visa Information
TTUHSC, at its sole discretion, may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Abbott. Approval from the Texas Workforce Commission is required.
