Responsibilities
- Examines and interprets prepared tissue sections and body fluids using various microscopy techniques.
- Diagnoses the presence and stage of diseases and identifies their etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical significance.
- Consults with referring physicians regarding test ordering and interpretation, and provides diagnostic information through pathology reports.
- Participates in proficiency testing programs and departmental meetings to ensure accurate diagnoses and quality care.
- Attends professional organizations, conferences, and seminars to stay updated on pathology developments.
- May perform gross examinations, dissections, and specimen descriptions.
- Might train and educate laboratory personnel, students, and residents.
- May take photographs of specimens for patient reports or archival purposes.
- Collaborates with peers on difficult cases as needed.
- Might teach residents on a rotating basis.
- May supervise pathology staff, residents, or visiting pathologists.
- May testify as an expert witness in depositions or trials.
- Performs autopsies as necessary.
- Handles on-call responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.
- Licenses to practice medicine or osteopathy in the state where the laboratory is located, and applicable states receiving specimens.
- Completion of an approved four-year residency in anatomic and/or clinical pathology, and a two-year surgical medical fellowship for surgical pathology.
- Certification in anatomic or clinical pathology, or both, by the American Board of Pathology or American Osteopathic Board of Pathology, or equivalent qualifications.
Other Qualifications
- Minimum of one year pathology experience.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test.
- Compliance with Board of Medicine's annual continuing medical education requirements.
- Gains and maintains appropriate medical staff membership and privileges at applicable medical facilities.
Pay and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $300K to $400K, with pay commensurate with experience and subspecialty training. Geographic differentials may apply. Sonic Healthcare USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range.
