Patent Agent - Electrical (NYC)

About the Role

Stinson LLP is seeking an experienced patent agent to join the patent prosecution group of our Intellectual Property and Technology Division. The role involves procuring patent protection for clients across diverse industries, including industrial automation software, aviation, industrial machinery and controls, medical devices, outdoor recreational products, consumer products, transportation, construction, agribusiness, sports and recreation, cannabis, HVAC, infrastructure protection and repair, manufacturing equipment, and electrical and fiber optic connectors.

Responsibilities

• Draft and prosecute U.S. and foreign patent applications.
• Provide patentability assessments and assist with freedom-to-operate and due diligence assessments.
• Coordinate and correspond with foreign law firms and associates for foreign patent filings.
• Communicate with clients to process and legalize formal documents for U.S. and foreign patent offices.
• Review country requirements and obtain Foreign Filing Licenses as needed.
• Maintain client patent portfolios and prepare notices regarding upcoming deadlines.
• Correspond with foreign law firms regarding filings, deadlines, and billings.
• Anticipate supervising partner or client needs for specific projects and delegate tasks effectively.
• Meet the annual billable hour requirement of 1,650 hours.
• Perform other duties as assigned (5% of role).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, higher degree, or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or a similar engineering field (or relevant work experience).
• U.S. Patent & Trademark Office registration.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
• Experience managing a patent prosecution docket and taking ownership of patent applications throughout all phases of prosecution.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with supervising partners, legal administration assistants, patent paralegals, and docketing specialists.
• Law firm or in-house IP experience.
• Exceptional writing, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
• Extensive experience across mechanical, electro-mechanical, electrical, and software technologies.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $99,000 – $122,000, based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

Schedule

• Full-time position with an annual billable hour requirement of 1,650 hours.
• Occasional additional hours may be required to complete work.

This role operates in a professional office environment, routinely using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The position may require:
