Passenger Boarding Bridge & Baggage Handling & Makeup Systems Subject Matter Experts – Aviation & Infrastructure – PA/MD/NJ/DE*
About the role
CMTS is seeking experienced Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBB) and Baggage Handling & Makeup Systems (BHMS) for airport terminal projects in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Responsibilities
- Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) SME:
- Lead the planning, design, procurement, integration, testing, and commissioning of PBB systems.
- Evaluate gate layouts and ensure compatibility between PBBs, terminal facilities, apron configurations, and aircraft fleets.
- Provide technical oversight for PBBs, PCA systems, aircraft ground power systems, and associated gate equipment.
- Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, equipment selections, and installation methodologies for compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate with airlines, airport operations, designers, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to address operational and technical requirements.
- Assess aircraft compatibility, gate utilization, and operational efficiency considerations during project planning and design.
- Support procurement activities, vendor evaluations, factory inspections, and equipment acceptance processes.
- Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), integrated testing, and commissioning activities.
- Monitor construction and installation activities to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and operational requirements.
- Identify and resolve technical issues related to equipment integration, controls, structural interfaces, and operational performance.
- Support operational readiness, training, system handover, and transition-to-operations activities.
- Provide technical recommendations to improve gate operations, maintainability, reliability, and passenger experience.
- Baggage Handling & Makeup Systems (BHMS) SME:
- Lead the planning, design, implementation, integration, testing, and commissioning of BHMS systems.
- Develop system concepts, design criteria, capacity analyses, and operational requirements for baggage processing facilities.
- Review and approve baggage handling system layouts, conveyor routing, sortation strategies, and baggage makeup area configurations.
- Provide technical oversight for baggage transport systems, sortation equipment, controls systems, and baggage screening integration.
- Cook up interfaces between BHMS systems, security screening systems, airline systems, and airport operational databases.
- Evaluate system performance requirements related to throughput, reliability, redundancy, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Review contractor submittals, technical specifications, shop drawings, controls documentation, and equipment selections.
- Support procurement activities, technology evaluations, vendor selection, and contract technical reviews.
- Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), integrated systems testing, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
- Monitor construction and installation activities to ensure compliance with project requirements, operational objectives, and safety standards.
- Identify and resolve technical issues affecting baggage flow, screening operations, sortation accuracy, and airline interfaces.
- Collaborate with airport operators, airlines, security agencies, consultants, contractors, and system vendors throughout project delivery.
- Support training, operational transition, system acceptance, and post-implementation performance assessments.
- Provide recommendations to optimize baggage system capacity, operational efficiency, passenger service levels, and long-term maintainability.
Requirements
- Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) SME:
- Minimum 10–15 years of experience in airport systems planning, design, implementation, and commissioning, including significant PBB experience.
- Demonstrated expertise with passenger boarding bridge systems, gate equipment, pre-conditioned air (PCA) systems, and aircraft ground power systems.
- Extensive knowledge of airport gate operations, aircraft compatibility requirements, apron safety standards, and terminal interface considerations.
- Experience supporting new terminal developments, terminal expansions, gate modernization programs, or airport rehabilitation projects.
- Familiarity with applicable aviation, safety, accessibility, and operational standards governing passenger boarding bridge systems.
- Experience evaluating PBB manufacturers, equipment specifications, procurement strategies, and lifecycle considerations.
- Strong understanding of structural, electrical, mechanical, and controls interfaces associated with gate and terminal infrastructure.
- Proven experience coordinating with airport operators, airlines, architects, engineers, contractors, and equipment manufacturers.
- Excellent technical writing, stakeholder engagement, and project coordination skills.
- Experience on large hub airport projects and multiple aircraft fleet types preferred.
- Baggage Handling & Makeup Systems (BHMS) SME:
- Minimum 10–15 years of experience in baggage handling system (BHS) planning, design, implementation, integration, and commissioning, including airport terminal projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in conveyor systems, sortation technologies, baggage screening integration, baggage makeup operations, and system controls.
- Extensive knowledge of airport baggage operations, airline requirements, passenger processing workflows, and terminal logistics.
- Experience with in-line baggage screening systems and integration with security screening technologies.
- Strong understanding of baggage handling system capacity analysis, simulation modeling, throughput requirements, and operational performance metrics.
- Experience developing and reviewing technical specifications, system layouts, control philosophies, and equipment procurement documents.
- Familiarity with PLC-based controls, SCADA systems, networked control systems, and baggage management software platforms.
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT, integrated systems testing, commissioning, operational readiness, and system acceptance activities.
- Knowledge of system redundancy, maintainability, reliability, and lifecycle asset management principles.
- Ability to identify and resolve complex operational and technical issues involving baggage flow, screening, sortation, and airline interfaces.
- Proven experience coordinating with airport operators, airlines, security agencies, consultants, contractors, and system vendors.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and technical leadership skills.
- Experience delivering baggage handling systems for major airport terminal expansions, new terminals, or airport modernization programs preferred.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering with 10 years of experience or 20 years of experience working with Passenger Boarding Bridge SME or Baggage Handling & Makeup Systems SME.
