Part Time Victim Advocate

About the role

The Victim Advocate Program within the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) seeks a part-time Victim Advocate to provide critical support to victims of violent crimes. This position involves crisis intervention, information provision, and referral services.

Responsibilities

• Provides crisis interventions for victims of violent crimes.
• Evaluates needs and makes appropriate referrals for counseling, housing, shelter, legal assistance, and other services as needed.
• Assists victims in obtaining protective orders and filing victim reparation forms, witness statements, and medical release forms.
• Coordinates transportation to and from court hearings, shelters, and other services.
• Follows up on assigned cases and reviews incident reports to determine advocacy needs.
• Communicates with law enforcement, prosecutors, and other agencies to support victims.
• Trains and educates various audiences on victim assistance.
• Attends court proceedings and supports victims.
• Manages assigned cases, documents, and statistical data.
• May serve as a trainer and attend relevant conferences.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Social or Behavioral Science and one (1) year related work experience, or an associate degree in Social or Behavioral Science and three (3) years related work experience.
• Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Working knowledge of victimology, trauma-informed responses, judicial processes, and resources for victims of crimes.
• Valid driver license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
• Successfully pass all appropriate examinations as required by the Salt Lake City Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations.

Qualifications

• High-degree of independent judgment, decision-making, and exceptional ability to work with diverse populations in difficult situations.
• Experience and education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
