About the role
The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single point of contact in the branch for SouthState customers’ financial needs. The position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and Financial Service Representative (FSR), providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management. The Universal Banker seeks to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and is responsible for contributing to the financial growth of the bank.
Responsibilities
- Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to SouthState Bank Service Standards.
- Knows and understands the products and services offered by the Bank, including facts, features, benefits, rules, regulations, price structure, and definitions.
- Identifies customer needs and expectations by listening for clues; expands customer relationships by making referrals as outlined in position goals.
- Presents a neat and professional personal appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develops a strong understanding of customer-facing technology to discuss and enroll customers in self-service options.
Teller Duties
- Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area; may assist in guiding and training new tellers.
- Allows customers access to safe deposit boxes as needed.
- Cashes checks and processes savings withdrawals within assigned limits and in accordance with prescribed procedures.
- Sells certified checks and balances transactions daily.
- May service/balance ATMs and utilize the branch capture system.
- Follows policies and procedures to complete transactions, minimize operational errors, and maintain proper workflow.
- Knows and follows the branch’s security and audit procedures, including the function and operation of security devices.
Financial Service Representative (FSR) Duties
- Opens new deposit accounts and understands the products and financial services offered by the bank.
- Handles services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explains policies and procedures to customers, keeping in mind their unfamiliarity with them.
- Resolves customer problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion; directs complex issues to appropriate sources for assistance.
- Views problems and complaints as opportunities to satisfy the customer and promote additional services.
- Shows sincere appreciation for each customer’s time and business; provides business cards as needed.
- Follows the branch’s security and audit procedures, including the function and operation of security devices.
- Ensures branch records, reports, and correspondence resulting from customer interactions are correct, timely, and properly distributed.
Universal Banker Functions
- Requires one year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer relationship building or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
- May include vault responsibilities or back-up vault responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Cash handling, sales, and customer service experience; previous banking experience preferred.
- Good interpersonal and computer skills.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations.
- Must be able to identify customers.
Work Environment
This position is typically located in an open lobby area with an individual workstation inside a cooled and heated facility. Access to a break room or restroom is available during breaks. Travel may be required for meetings or training as needed.
Schedule
- Monday and Friday: 8:15 AM – 5:30 PM
- Tuesday and Thursday: 12:30 PM – 5:30 PM
- Off on Wednesday
