Under administrative leadership, the part-time college instructor is responsible for teaching classes and participating in processes that improve instruction, programs, student success, and the advancement of the college’s vision, mission, and values.

Pay

All Temporary Part-time Instructors are compensated a salaried flat rate ranging from $59.19 to $84.20 per clock hour taught each semester, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association/CTA/NEA.

Responsibilities

  • Meet classes/laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar, including intersessions and summer sessions.
  • Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, consistent with the official course outline and District guidelines.
  • Maintain online course components for online and hybrid courses, including asynchronous or synchronous content delivery.
  • Provide regular student-student and student-instructor contact for online and hybrid courses.
  • Develop and distribute a syllabus for each course during the first week of class, outlining course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements in accordance with District guidelines.
  • Provide regular, timely feedback to students and return all graded work promptly.
  • Assign final grades for courses as required by District policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
  • Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in District policy and applicable laws.
  • Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner, considering cost to the student.
  • Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.
  • Supervise students in off-campus activities when required as part of a course or instructor’s load.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current in the assigned discipline.
  • Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Fulfill discipline-specific classroom responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Continue to develop professional skills and remain current in subject matter knowledge.
  • Keep and submit official records required by District policy and administrative procedures.
  • Abide by District policies concerning District property and safety.
  • Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
  • Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Fulfill all obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.

Other Activities

Part-time faculty are encouraged, but not required, to engage in the following activities. Some may be eligible for flex pay or stipends:

  • Schedule and maintain office hours, ensuring they are clearly communicated to students and division staff.
  • Participate in participatory governance through District committees.
  • Engage in the curriculum review process and develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
  • Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
  • Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcomes processes.
  • Participate in required professional development activities that improve pedagogy and student success.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Broad preparation and depth of knowledge in the discipline.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population.
  • Ability to work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
  • Ability to design and deliver courses in different modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid).
  • Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency.
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that benefit students and programs.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Education

  • Master’s or higher degree in Nursing, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing AND a Master’s in health education, health science, or the equivalent.

Master’s degree with a teaching component is preferred but not required. Successful applicants without a teaching component will be required to complete an approved Board of Registered Nursing Instructional Remediation Plan or demonstrate that they have taught theory in a pre- or post-licensure program to meet this qualification.

Discipline-Specific Requirements

  • Valid, active California RN license.
  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years, met by one of the following:
    • Minimum of one year of continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care, OR
    • Minimum of one academic year of registered nurse-level clinical teaching experience, met by:
      • Teaching in a pre- or post-licensure registered nursing educational program for one academic year, OR
      • Completion of a post-baccalaureate registered nursing educational course that includes practice in teaching registered nursing (teaching strategies, course outline and lesson plan development, evaluation, and practice teaching).
  • Validated clinical competence—possesses and exercises the degree of learning, skill, care, and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff-level registered nurses.
  • California BRN faculty approval to supervise/instruct students in assigned clinical agencies.

Experience

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Equivalency

The state of California has established minimum qualifications for academic positions in California Community Colleges. Applicants who do not meet the minimum education requirement(s) for a discipline may still qualify if they demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities through a combination of education and experience. Shasta College encourages candidates who believe they meet qualifications through equivalency to apply.

The Equivalency Committee will review all submitted documents and approve or disapprove equivalency based on established guidelines.
