About the role
This is a part-time, year-round position for students, designed to augment regular full-time staff. You will work 10–20 hours per week during the academic year and 35–40 hours per week during the summer semester. Relocation assistance is not provided. The role is onsite at John Deere’s Ames Research Park in Ames, Iowa.
Responsibilities
- Effectively communicate and work in a team environment
- Propose or evaluate design solutions to improve cost, quality, and performance
- Develop software using JAVA and other programming languages
- Test design concepts in lab tests or in field environments on prototype equipment
- Apply technical knowledge to identify and resolve design weaknesses
- Assess lab and field event data for impact to product reliability
Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical or Computer/Software Engineering (others may apply)
- Registered as a full-time student at an accredited College/University
- Graduation date of May 2027 or later
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
- Available to work 10–20 hours weekly during the academic year
- Available to work 35–40 hours weekly during the summer semester
- Must be onsite in Ames, Iowa, during the summer semester
- Must be able to complete assignments remotely or onsite at the Ames Research Park during the school year
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Experience with a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, C++, Python, Visual Basic, Arduino, Raspberry Pi)
Skills
- Computer Vision and Machine Learning
- Experience on a John Deere-sponsored FIRST Robotics Team
- Knowledge or work experience in production agriculture (tillage, planters, and sprayers)
- Product engineering experience (design, testing, software testing)
- Data analytics (Python, R, SQL)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, Tableau, or Power BI

Pay
$15 – $40 hourly, based on business function and education level.
