Part Time Structural Engineer
Position Summary
This position is accountable for providing senior level structural design engineering support for the construction of marine structures for Orion and its affiliates. Typical projects may include port facilities, wharves, liquid cargo terminals, bridges and causeways, container terminals, cruise terminals, bulkheads, docks, piers, or marinas. The incumbent will typically supervise Engineers and Project Management team members on a regular basis. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly with each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity.
Specific Responsibilities
- Works with the VP of Engineering and Engineering and Structural Design team to achieve departmental business goals and objectives.
- Learns and applies extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assigned engineering projects.
- Performs structural engineering analysis and design of new and existing marine structures (bulkheads, sheet-pile walls, retaining walls, concrete wharves, and mooring/breasting dolphins).
- Performs finite element structural modeling of marine structures (SAP or STAAD).
- Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
- Develops new techniques and/or improved processes for design projects.
- Provides technical advice on safe designs and construction.
- Reviews and approves scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
- Prepares bid package proposals for upcoming engineering and project work.
- Represents the Company at industry-wide conferences and symposiums.

Position Requirements
- BS Degree in Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of eight (8) years of work experience is required.
- Prior work experience in the marine construction, heavy industrial, or engineering design industries is preferred but not required.
- The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Engineering Standards, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, and Safety and Environmental Compliance.
- The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business; be an effective communicator; have the ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization; and possess a high degree of personal integrity.
- The incumbent must be well organized, diligent, and be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision and to independently identify work to be done.
- The incumbent must be flexible and have the ability to adjust to sudden changes in work priorities.
- The incumbent must have the ability to prioritize work generally and in order to accommodate those changes.
- The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.
- The incumbent must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
