Position Overview

The City of Evanston Parks & Recreation Department is seeking an energetic, dependable, and engaging Part-Time SilverSneakers Instructor to lead group fitness classes for older adults. The ideal candidate is passionate about helping older adults stay active, healthy, and connected through safe, enjoyable, and accessible exercise. The instructor will create a welcoming environment where participants of varying fitness levels feel comfortable, supported, and motivated to participate.

Teaching Locations

Depending on programming needs, classes may be held at any of the following City of Evanston facilities:

  • Levy Senior Center
  • Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto Community Center
  • Robert Crown Community Center
  • Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center

Instructors should be comfortable teaching at different locations as program needs and schedules change.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging SilverSneakers group fitness classes for adults age 55 and older.
  • Provide clear demonstrations and verbal instructions for exercises and movements.
  • Offer modifications and adaptations to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive class environment.
  • Monitor participants during class and promote proper exercise technique and safety.
  • Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes.
  • Follow SilverSneakers program standards and City of Evanston Parks & Recreation policies.
  • Communicate professionally with participants, staff, and facility management.
  • Complete required attendance and class documentation.
  • Help create an upbeat, welcoming atmosphere that encourages participants to stay active and engaged.

Qualifications

  • Current SilverSneakers instructor certification.
  • Additional fitness certifications are preferred and may qualify the instructor for additional class opportunities.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain prior to beginning employment.
  • Experience teaching group fitness classes, preferably with older adults.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide exercise modifications for participants with varying abilities.
  • Dependable, professional, and enthusiastic.
  • Commitment to creating a respectful and inclusive environment for all participants.

Pay

$30-$40 per class, depending on qualifications, certifications, and the type of class taught.

Schedule

Most classes will be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Class days, times, and locations will vary based on programming needs and instructor availability. Flexibility to teach at multiple City of Evanston facilities is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a fitness center environment. The position requires frequent standing, walking, and demonstration of exercises. Employees must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds and assist clients with equipment as needed.
