About the role
The Security Officer (Part Time) position ensures a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors through patrol duties and adherence to school policies.
Responsibilities
- Conducts ongoing security patrols of the building.
- Enforces Board policies regarding smoking, parking, loitering, trespassing, theft, vandalism, property damage, alcohol, drug abuse, and other school rules and regulations.
- Reports concerns and incidents that may require corrective action to Security Coordinator, Security Manager, School Director, and/or emergency services.
- Encourages appropriate student conduct with regard to school rules and regulations and regulations.
- Aids visitors to the school in receiving proper direction, assists in maintaining log of all visitors, and prevents unauthorized persons from entering the building.
- Maintains crowd control as needed in accordance with established guidelines regarding the use of force.
- Monitors grounds at dropoff/dismissal to prevent loitering and improper parking of vehicles.
- Monitors surveillance and access control systems.
- Identifies and responds to emergencies as per policy and security manual.
Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance.
- Typical qualifications include a High School Diploma and completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Successful experience in security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
- NJ SORA Certification required.
- Maintain CPR/AED certification.
- Prior to employment, the following must be addressed:
- Complete a criminal history background check.
- Provide evidence of adequate health to fulfill job functions.
- Pass the state-required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test.
- Obtain Motor Vehicle Operator's License or have ability to provide own transportation.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning charter school related matters.
- Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the school director finds appropriate and acceptable.
Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials.
- Requires the ability to work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Occasionally requires stooping, bending, or reaching.
- Requires some traveling.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
Provides for the safety and security of students, staff, visitors and School District property in accordance with School District policies to provide an educational climate which is conducive to learning.
Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
- Knowledge of best practices in building security and safety.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and codes related to building safety and security, including OSHA, and Electronic Surveillance laws.
- Knowledge of security and alarm systems, electronic surveillance, and related safety and security devices.
- Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal, security guards and others.
- Ability to describe orally or in writing, security problems as needed.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to maintain a professional, calm and authoritative manner when challenged by students.
Physical And Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
- Ability to de-escalate and separate students or others involved in altercations.
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
Equipment
- Uses radio communications equipment.
- Uses computers to create reports, monitor surveillance cameras, and utilize access control system.
