About the Role
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and passionate Part-Time Recreation Specialist to plan, organize, and execute programs and services for diverse communities, including preschoolers, youth, adults, and seniors. Program areas may include athletics, social events, afterschool programs, summer/day camps, and health and wellness. This role will help form strong community partnerships and assess needs for increased program offerings.
This part-time position is located at Berewick Recreation Center, with a schedule of approximately 29 hours per week, including mid-day shifts (starting at 12:00 PM), evenings, and weekends on a rotating basis. Responsibilities
- Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
- Provide customer service and handle funds through telephone, email, website, social media, and in-person interactions for program registration, facility use, and rentals.
- Ensure participant and spectator safety; administer first aid when necessary.
- Enforce rules and regulations for recreational programs and facilities.
- Collect fees and registrations for programs and facility rentals.
- Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
- Referee sports activities; serve as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or linesperson at games.
- Supervise children in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
- Handle public inquiries and complaints.
- Drive a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to different locations as needed.
- Assist with department events and field trips.
- Serve as manager on duty in the absence of the Recreation Facility Manager.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree with 6 months of prior work experience as a temporary or part-time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree with two years of related experience.
- Four years of similar related experience.
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
- Ability to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification within one year of hire.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2-3 years of experience facilitating community-based recreation programs for diverse audiences.
- Experience in activity programming for afterschool programs.
