About the role

The Virginia Department of Education is seeking a Part-Time Physical Education Specialist to lead the creation of a comprehensive technical-assistance infrastructure. This role enhances the capacity of teachers and program leaders by providing ongoing support grounded in the latest scientific research on optimizing learning and evidence-based pedagogy, thereby improving K–12 Physical Education instruction statewide.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and assess policies, programs, regulations, and reports from the Department of Education, other state agencies, the State Board of Education, and federal agencies; communicate interpretations to communities, school divisions, and the public.
  • Provide specialized analytical and technical assistance—including information, reports, presentations, reviews, and explanatory materials—related to accreditation, budget, and policy issues.
  • Deliver specialized technical assistance on teacher education and licensure matters.
  • Coordinate the review and revision process of the Physical Education Standards of Learning as prescribed by the Code of Virginia.
  • Coordinate, develop, and review materials, guidelines, and programs to ensure alignment with the Physical Education Standards of Learning and improve student achievement.
  • Oversee the review and revision of the Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks/Instructional Guides to align with current standards.
  • Plan, organize, develop, and implement programs, activities, workshops, and meetings for school administrators, supervisors, curriculum coordinators, and teachers on physical education, technology, and evidence-based pedagogy that may impact student achievement.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Physical Education standards, Virginia Code, and Board of Education requirements.
  • Considerable knowledge of evidence-based pedagogical approaches, current trends, research, and best practices in physical education.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning review process, local school division responsibilities, state and local government policies, and state agency functions.
  • Considerable experience delivering professional development and managing and scaling projects.
  • Considerable knowledge of resource allocation, budgets, grant writing, and management.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, manage time and workload, adjust to new or emerging priorities, meet schedules, forecast trends, and collaborate with other agencies and lead staff on complex initiatives.
  • Proficiency in computer software for word processing, graphical presentations, databases, spreadsheets, and other technologies.
  • Ability to define problems, apply problem-solving techniques to complex educational issues, conduct research, work effectively with support staff and professional teams, manage multiple assignments/projects with critical deadlines, and coordinate, critique, and edit work products of diverse technical and professional experts.
  • Recognized expertise in physical education.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate degree in K–12 physical education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An advanced degree in curriculum and instruction, education leadership, school counseling, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience developing physical education curriculum, making cross-curricular connections, and long-range program planning is desirable.
  • Experience delivering staff development for teachers, working with professional organizations, and promoting staff wellness initiatives and physical-education life-skills programming for local school divisions is desired.

Pay

Hiring range: $49.50 – $52.00 per hour (Pay Band 5)
