About the role
The Pet Care Assistant works with the veterinary medical team to provide and prepare for the best medical care of pets, ensuring this is delivered in a happy, welcoming, friendly, and efficient manner that encourages clients to return and refer others.
Responsibilities
- Prepare the treatment room for examinations and all necessary medical items and supplies (e.g., vaccinations, fecal loops, slides) for the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician.
- Set up fecals, smears, and skin scrapings as allowed by state rules and regulations.
- Maintain the flow of the Cycle of Service in accordance with the position.
- Provide client education on preventive care, Optimum Wellness Plans, and the basic status of hospitalized pets.
- Support the Client Services Coordinator staff as needed.
- Hold or restrain pets during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
- Prepare routine in-house laboratory tests (e.g., canine heartworm, feline leukemia, FIV, and canine parvovirus) as allowed by state rules and regulations.
- Monitor and ensure the comfort of hospitalized patients by walking, exercising, feeding, and cleaning cages (when approved by the veterinarian or veterinary technician).
- Bathe and dip pets to treat dermatological conditions when advised by the veterinarian or veterinary technician.
- Clean the surgical suite and instruments.
- Maintain hospital cleanliness, including laundry, dishes, mopping, cage cleaning, trash removal, and instrument cleaning as outlined by hospital protocols.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Requirements

- Strong communication skills: fluent English (reading, writing, speaking) with appropriate grammar, style, and vocabulary; correct spelling of common and job-specific terms.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography (x-ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.
- One year of related experience required; customer service experience preferred.

Working Conditions
- Ability to work at a computer for long periods.
- Confidence around pets (e.g., dogs, cats, birds, reptiles).
- Work volume may require more than 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.
- Requires mental processes for reasoning, memory, mathematics, and language (reading, writing, speaking English).
- Moderately high noise levels in the work environment.
- Sufficient ambulatory skills to perform duties, including standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 50 pounds.
- Good hand-eye coordination, arm-hand-finger dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboard and equipment operation.
- Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Routine exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
Pay
The pay range for this role is $15.00 - $16.91 per hour, with the specific rate determined based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, education, and location or applicable minimum wage laws.
