Part-Time Nursing Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges:

• Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 – $130.94 per hour
• Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 – $151.07 per hour

Assignments are semester-based as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical instruction in acute, long-term, and community care settings
• Implement skill-building in the nursing lab
• Report to the lead instructor as needed
• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
• Participate in nursing team, department, and division meetings
• Assist in curriculum development and revision
• Perform other duties required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, or institutional needs

Requirements

• Master’s or higher in nursing, or Bachelor’s in nursing and Master’s or higher in health education or health science, or equivalent (see below), or minimum qualifications set by the Board of Registered Nursing
• Current California Registered Nursing license
• At least one year’s continuous experience within the previous five years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care (clinical teaching applies)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds

Equivalency: If your degree or background differs from the stated qualifications, you may submit an Application for Equivalence during the application process. Equivalency may be demonstrated through:

• Degree Equivalence: A degree with similar content, even if titled differently or with slightly varied coursework
• Academic Background Equivalence: At least 24 semester units in the academic field, plus a broad cultural education (e.g., general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree)
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Evidence of outstanding professional achievement, training, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, or equivalent preparation, teaching, or work experience

Skills and Abilities

• Recent clinical experience in acute care medical-surgical nursing
• Ability to support and adapt teaching for students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, gender identity, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
• Contribute to program changes in department and team meetings
• Teach in assigned clinical areas, including evenings or weekends as needed
• Monitor and evaluate student progress in clinical settings
• Use active teaching methods to engage students and develop problem-solving skills
• Assist students in acquiring, analyzing, and evaluating clinical knowledge and skills
• Collaborate collegially with faculty and staff at department, division, college, and district levels
• Reflect on and evaluate teaching effectiveness, modifying techniques to improve student engagement
• Commitment to the goals of the teaching profession and the mission of the community college
• Willingness to update skills as needed
• Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical teaching techniques
• Proficiency in computer-based technology relevant to nursing education and openness to expanding its use
• Alignment with SMCCCD’s goal of integrating writing skills across the curriculum
