About the role

The Neighborhood Captain is a part-time, on-site role based in Akron, OH, focused on building relationships and organizing within a specific local area. In this position, the Neighborhood Captain will regularly canvass, talk with residents, share information about campaigns or initiatives, and gather feedback from the community. The role includes coordinating small local events or gatherings, distributing materials, and supporting voter engagement or issue-based outreach as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Movement Labs staff and volunteers to refine local strategies.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to talk with diverse community members and build trust.
  • Experience or interest in grassroots organizing, community outreach, or local advocacy work.
  • Ability to work independently in the field, stay organized, and reliably track contacts and activities.
  • Comfort with basic technology tools (smartphone apps, texting, email, online forms) to record data and communicate with the team.
  • Reliable transportation to and within Akron, OH, and willingness to walk or move around the neighborhood regularly.
  • Availability for part-time hours, including some evenings and weekends based on community needs.
  • Commitment to progressive values, equity, and inclusive, non-discriminatory engagement with all residents.

Qualifications

  • Prior volunteer or campaign experience is helpful but not required; training will be provided.
