Part-time Library Cataloging Associate
This position supports access to library materials by cataloging, classifying, and processing physical and digital resources for the JCPL collection. It ensures the accuracy and quality of catalog records, authority control, and vendor-supplied materials while applying current library standards and providing guidance to staff on cataloging policies and procedures. The role must comply with laws governing patron privacy and confidentiality, the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, and ADA governing public access to space and technology.
Responsibilities
- Record Control: Perform quality checks of vendor-supplied records. Compare vendor-supplied processing to catalog records and JCPL processing profiles. Ensure vendor records load and display correctly in the public catalog. Perform minor data corrections for series titles and subject headings as needed. Conduct copy cataloging for materials without shelf-ready cataloging and processing. Refer complex copy cataloging questions to Librarians and authority clean-up projects to Catalog Librarians. Direct materials needing label reprints or passing quality checks to the proper queues.
- Data Control: Monitor street dates and turnaround to meet availability deadlines. Prioritize materials for efficient workflow to meet deadlines and production goals. Assist Librarians in running and processing collection status reports. Update records to comply with current cataloging standards. Perform standard data quality checks and maintenance functions to improve quality. Participate in inventory control and reporting processes. Ensure currency of records for materials being added or deleted from the catalog.
- Operational Duties: Assist in monitoring workflows and making adjustments to improve processes. Help create a positive and productive atmosphere in Collections. Monitor vendor performance and report issues. Provide support for special projects. Stay current on JCPL policies, procedures, cataloging rules, and maintain expertise in cataloging software. Participate in software beta testing for Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and provide feedback. Report software performance issues to supervisors and systems administrators. Collaborate in cross-functional teams to accomplish goals. May assume responsibility as Person-in-Charge for assigned locations, including handling emergencies and ensuring adherence to policies. Request facility or equipment maintenance services.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum one year of related library experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in library science.
- Previous experience in technical services, cataloging, acquisitions, or collections work in a public, academic, or special library.
- Knowledge of cataloging standards and practices, including classification systems such as Dewey Decimal Classification.

Pay
Hiring range: $23.39 - $29.24 per hour.
Schedule
- Scheduled weekly hours: 20.
This role is based at the Library Service Center (LSC), a non-public-facing facility supporting collection services and library operations behind the scenes. This union position is represented by AFSCME and is part of the bargaining unit, with eligibility for union membership under the collective bargaining agreement.
