About the role
The General Food Service Worker plays a vital role in supporting kitchen operations and delivering high-quality food service at Bradford Woods, Indiana University's Outdoor Center.
Responsibilities
- Prepares food items according to menus and portion sizes under direct supervision.
- Measures, weighs, and prepares ingredients using manual or electric appliances; washes, peels, slices, and trims foods as needed for meal preparation.
- Cooks and assembles menu items following established standards.
- Washes dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment; maintains proper sanitation practices.
- Affords assistance to cooks and other kitchen staff during meal service as needed.
- Maintains a clean and functional kitchen by cleaning equipment, appliances, and work areas, removing trash, and sanitizing garbage containers.
Requirements
- General knowledge at the high school level.
- Preferred High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Skills
- Working knowledge of preparation methods and practices for a variety of foods.
- Considerable knowledge of basic kitchen sanitation methods and food safety practices.
- Effective communication and exchange of information.
- Ability to read and interpret recipes and calculate necessary quantities of ingredients.
- Ability to learn to operate institutional kitchen equipment.
- Coordination of both preparation and timing for menu food items.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Ability to remain stationary for extended periods and perform light to medium physical tasks in hot working conditions.
- Effective communication skills.
