Part-time Farm Specialist

About the role

Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park in Richmond, Virginia, featuring the Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975, the nonprofit Maymont Foundation has maintained and operated Maymont, creating experiences that delight, educate, and inspire guests. The Foundation seeks a part-time Farm Specialist to support the Maymont Farm, reporting to the Senior Manager of Zoology.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the appearance of facilities by cleaning and prepping animal enclosures and pastures to meet Maymont standards for animal care and guest experience.
• Maintains animal stalls and pens by performing repairs and facility improvements independently.
• Maintains daily records and reports issues with animal facilities.
• Assists Animal Keepers with shifting animals between the barn and pastures in the morning and afternoon.
• Maintains the well-being of horses through daily routines such as hoof picks, brushing, and seasonal tasks.
• Provides meaningful guest experiences through interactions, behind-the-scenes tours, special programs, workshops, and classes.
• Participates in Maymont special events, which may require work outside of the regular schedule.
• Assists with other duties and tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in using tools (hand or power), including weed eaters and mowers.
• Experience performing repairs such as wooden fencing, board mending, and other minor repairs.
• Experience caring for horses is preferred.
• Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions.
• Ability to work with farm animals.
• Flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, special events, and holidays.
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with co-workers and visitors.
• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation to/from Maymont.
• Ability to pass a background check.

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and talking for extended periods.
• Frequent climbing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
