Part-Time Faculty: Philosophy Department

Salary Range or Pay Grade: $9,050 per course

About the Role

The Philosophy Department of Fordham University seeks part-time Non-Tenure Track (NTT) faculty to teach its "Philosophy of Human Nature" and "Philosophical Ethics" classes on a rolling basis. Based on scheduling needs, qualifications, and availability, successful candidates may be offered up to two sections per semester.

• Philosophy of Human Nature: A required Core course focusing on central metaphysical and epistemological questions surrounding human nature, with readings from classical thinkers such as Plato and Descartes, as well as thinkers from under-represented groups in philosophy.
• Philosophical Ethics: Focuses on major normative ethical theories underlying moral decision-making in everyday life, with readings from classical thinkers such as Aristotle and Kant, as well as thinkers from under-represented groups in philosophy.

We seek instructors who can foster engaging, equitable teaching and learning environments in concert with Fordham’s Jesuit mission. Part-time NTT instructors are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU Local 200), with employment terms, including minimum per-course rates, set by the Adjunct Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Courses may be assigned at either or both of Fordham's main campuses: Rose Hill (Bronx) and Lincoln Center (Manhattan). Rose Hill has a larger student body, and staffing needs are often concentrated there. Candidates may specify campus preference but should note that priority may be given to those open to teaching at either campus.

• Teach up to two sections per semester of "Philosophy of Human Nature" or "Philosophical Ethics."

Qualifications

• A terminal degree in Philosophy (PhD or MA) is required for new teaching hires.
• A minimum of one year of teaching experience at the college or university level.
• Experience successfully working with and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students.
• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered best practices in the teaching of Philosophy.
