Part-Time Faculty: CHE 103: Chemistry in the Modern World (Fall 2026)

Syracuse University’s Chemistry Department is seeking a part-time instructor for CHE 103: Chemistry in the Modern World (4 credits) during the Fall 2026 semester.

About the role

This course explores the basic concepts and principles of chemistry and their applications to problems in the modern world. The lecture meets in-person each Monday and Wednesday from 2:15 pm–3:35 pm. The instructor will also attend multiple in-person lab sessions per week. Syllabus templates, exam-preparation assistance, and logistical support from office staff are provided. All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
• Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Prepare lectures, projects, or other student assignments.
• Maintain two hours of regularly scheduled office hours per week.
• Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meet all designated class periods; if unable to meet due to illness or emergency, reschedule the class or obtain a substitute and notify the department chair.
• Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
• Work with the academic unit to maintain student learning outcomes.
• Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Complete all other course-related duties as outlined by departmental policies for part-time instruction.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field (or working toward one).
• Previous experience teaching chemistry.
• Strong laboratory background or previous laboratory instruction experience.
