Part-Time Evening Custodian- Immediate Opening
About the Role
Springfield Prep Charter School, a K-8 public charter school in Springfield, Massachusetts, is seeking a Part-Time Evening Custodian to ensure the upkeep, cleanliness, and safety of school buildings and grounds. This part-time position works from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and is responsible for cleaning assigned areas, restocking materials, and maintaining a safe environment for students, staff, and community members.
Responsibilities
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
- Gather and empty trash.
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
- Clean and polish fixtures, windows, and mirrors.
- Dust furniture, walls, window sills, and vents.
- Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications.
- Steam-clean or shampoo carpets as needed.
- Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors as directed.
- Follow procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment use.
- Monitor building security and safety, ensuring doors are locked and hazards are avoided.
- Move heavy furniture and equipment using hand trucks.
- Notify managers of major repair needs.
- Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately.
- Remove snow and spread salt on sidewalks in cold weather.
- Request supplies and equipment for cleaning duties.
- Clean up spills, including bodily fluids, safely.
- Maintain indoor and outdoor lighting.
- Set up and arrange facilities for events.
- Interact courteously with students, staff, and parents, resolving conflicts professionally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of janitorial experience.
- Experience in a school setting is highly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
Pay
Hourly pay starts at $18.18 per hour.
Schedule
This is a year-round position, working Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The facilities team enjoys two additional full weeks of vacation in April and over the Winter holidays. All other days the building is open, including school breaks and weather cancellations, team members are expected to report to work.
