About the position
VHB’s Natural Science group in our growing Providence, RI office is looking to add a temporary Environmental Scientist to join us part-time to support current and future projects. This role estimates about 24 hours per week, with the possibility of additional time depending on project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct natural resource surveys including wetland delineations, wildlife habitat evaluations, and rare species surveys.
- Prepare comprehensive studies and technical reports, including environmental impact statements and assessments.
- Develop federal, state, and local permit applications and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
- Design and conduct studies on key ecological issues to support public and private sector clients.
- Maintain ongoing dialog with clients to keep them apprised of project status and any changes in conditions.
- Establish and track project milestones and business goals, manage budgets, schedules, and deliverables, and supervise junior staff.

Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or a related field required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience: 3-5 years of professional environmental consulting experience required.
- Fieldwork: Ability and willingness to work in physically challenging outdoor situations in all weather conditions, with regular travel to project sites in southern New England.
- Technical Skills: Experience in plant species identification, soil characterization, and wetland delineation in the Northeast, and the ability to identify and describe wildlife habitats and ecological communities.
- Ability to prepare clear, well-organized technical reports and other written deliverables; writing samples may be requested.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with state (RI and/or MA) and federal wetland regulations, land use environmental regulations, and environmental permitting.
