Part Time Custodian

Purpose

The purpose of this job is to obtain basic training and understanding in the operation of municipal drinking water or wastewater treatment principles and procedures and their relationship with the standard protocol of the facilities owned and operated by the City of Savannah. Duties include, but not limited to, collecting and analyzing water/wastewater samples and performing minor physical repairs to equipment.

Essential Job Functions

• Learn major functions of the operation of assigned drinking water or wastewater facilities including, but not limited to the following:
  • Sample Collection and Analysis - Collection and analysis of samples from all phases of treatment; determination of primary water properties and content including, but not limited to Ph, turbidity, carbon dioxide content, alkalinity, chlorine and fluoride; visual inspection of water for color, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, and residual levels.
  • Making up treatment chemicals and changing of bulk chemical containers (i.e. chlorine).
  • Monitoring and adjustment of operation of plant equipment including pumps, chlorinators, fluoridators, pressure/vacuum gauges, flow meters, chlorine scales, chemical feeders, mixed liquor, aeration basins, level indicators, clarifiers, contact chambers, etc., as well as making up treatment chemicals and changing of bulk chemical containers (i.e. chlorine) and make minor physical repairs to equipment as necessary according to plant assignment.
  • Control of Treatment Processes - Changing of both hydraulic and chemical aspects of treatment processes based on customer demand, and water chemistry characteristics.
• Regulatory and Reporting - Basic understanding of federal and state regulations and reporting requirements.

Additional Job Functions

May be designated as a critical workforce employee requiring attendance on the job or at a designated shelter throughout an emergency situation or disaster. These emergency situations may include, but are not limited to, hurricanes, ice/snow storms or other such natural calamities.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED plus six months work experience in the field of public water treatment or distribution or industrial wet process or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must have normal or correctable color vision.
• Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays required.
• Must successfully complete mandatory Basic Water/Wastewater training course and obtain Georgia Water/Wastewater Operator Class 3 Certification within 18 months of employment.
• Verification of education, certification and licenses will be required prior to employment.
• Valid driver's license, background investigation, including supervised drug screen, and post-offer/pre-employment medical screen required.
