Part-Time Civilian Court Security

Description

An individual in this position is non-sworn, part-time court security for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), assigned specifically to the court security function. Civilian Court Security duties are limited to the Alachua County Criminal and Family-Civil Justice Centers only.

Examples of Duties

• Aid in providing security for judges, attorneys, witnesses, court employees, and the general public
• Aid in opening Circuit Court, County Court, and other judicial proceedings as required
• Aid Court Security Deputies in order to conduct efficient day-to-day operations of the courtroom and other judicial functions
• Aid in calling witnesses in court
• Respond to medical emergencies or other occurrences which arise within the courthouse
• Aid with miscellaneous duties assigned by the judge
• Aid with emergency evacuation of the courthouse
• Notify rescue or other appropriate authority and provide emergency assistance in disaster or other emergency situations
• Maintain an alert and business-like manner within the courthouse
• Observe all persons who arouse suspicion and notify a Court Security Deputy of any person whose appearance, conduct, or presence seems suspicious
• Write reports as directed in departmental procedures
• Collect DNA and fingerprint samples for FDLE submission

Typical Qualifications

• EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Preferred Major(s): Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or other related field. High School Diploma or GED. Associate's Degree or better preferred
• EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Previous or current CJSTC/FDLE law enforcement certification preferred. 15 to 20 years of prior law enforcement experience desirable. Able to act effectively without direct supervision; to exercise discretion, caution, reasonable calmness and self-control under adverse conditions and maintain control of a particular situation or emergency. Current, valid Florida driver license. Sit/stand for extended periods. See/hear at a normal range. Speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. Ambulate independently. Push/pull moderate loads. Bend and squat. Manual dexterity. Walk/run up stairs. Drive a vehicle. Successfully complete the Court Security training process
• KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to act effectively in extremely divergent interpersonal settings. Ability to analyze problems quickly and take appropriate action under stress. Ability to apply common sense and procedures to solve practical problems. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; to comprehend and follow orders. Ability to obtain relevant and accurate information through interview and observation. Ability to cope with situations courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to lift and carry both equipment and injured persons, climb flights of stairs, walk, stand, and perform lifesaving procedures such as Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support. Ability to maintain the mental alertness needed to observe activities and implement appropriate action. Ability to maintain emotional and psychological stability. Ability to remember names, faces, and other details of incidents and physical surroundings. Ability to use a computer with minimal instructions
