The Archdiocese of Chicago, the third largest in the United States, serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in 216 parishes across Cook and Lake Counties. It employs over 13,000 people in ministries including Catholic Charities, one of the region’s largest nonprofit social service agencies, and operates one of the country’s largest seminaries and private school systems.

About the role

We seek a Part-Time Campus Ministry Instructor at Calvert House, the University of Chicago’s Newman Center in Hyde Park. This ministry position calls for a theologian, catechist, or experienced faith formation leader to teach and form young adults in the Catholic intellectual tradition. The role requires a minimum of 10 hours per week, aligned with the academic calendar, with a spirit of pastoral and intellectual presence beyond set hours.

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly Bible study sessions, guiding students in close reading of Scripture within the Catholic tradition and in dialogue with the university’s intellectual culture.
  • Lead courses and sessions in the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA), accompanying inquirers and catechumens through the stages of initiation.
  • Develop syllabi, lesson plans, and course materials integrating rigorous intellectual content with personal faith formation, adapted for diverse academic and spiritual backgrounds.
  • Facilitate small faith communities, fostering theological reflection, spiritual friendship, and discipleship among students.
  • Recruit, train, and support student leaders who may co-facilitate small group discussions.
  • Develop or adapt formational materials for small group use in coordination with the Director.
  • Be present at Calvert House during scheduled programming and, as possible, at liturgical and community events.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director and other staff in coordinating faith formation programming.
  • Network with other campus ministry organizations at the University of Chicago.
  • Participate in student orientation events and major programming initiatives as requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Scripture, Ministry, or a related field is strongly preferred. Candidates with substantial demonstrated experience in Catholic catechesis, OCIA leadership, or faith formation will also be considered.
  • Teaching experience at the high school level or above is strongly preferred.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • Committed to and demonstrating a thorough understanding, respect, and support of the Catholic Church’s teachings, mission, and values.
  • Familiarity with Catholic Scripture scholarship and the Lectionary tradition.
  • Knowledge of the OCIA process, the Rite of Christian Initiation, and the liturgical year.
  • Experience in adult faith formation, catechesis, or small group ministry.
  • Ability to communicate complex theological ideas accessibly to a highly educated secular audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build genuine relationships with students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a ministry team environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology (MS Word, email, calendar systems).
  • VIRTUS or comparable safe environment training, or willingness to complete prior to beginning work.

Pay

This position offers an hourly range of $20.56 to $29.81. Pay within this range will be based on relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
