Part-Time Archaeological Field Technician

About the role

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with monitoring, Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological investigations, as needed. Compensation for this position is $20.00 – $24.00/hour, commensurate with experience, education, and certifications. The provided range is a good-faith estimate; the actual salary may vary based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and project workload.

Responsibilities

• Assist Project and Senior Archaeologists during Phase I–II fieldwork in the South, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northeast United States.
• Aid in identifying pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during shovel test pit (STP) or test unit (TU) excavation.
• Travel to non-local project sites as assigned; lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided and/or reimbursed.
• Mileage to and from the project area and drive time will be compensated.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
• Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
• Availability for non-local travel and flexible scheduling.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (rugged terrain, remote locations, hot/cold temperatures).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection.
• Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation.
• Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing.
• Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map.

Work Environment

• Fieldwork: 95% of the time; extensive bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
• Conditions include heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid environments.
• Office work: 5% of the time; sedentary with occasional standing and walking.
