About the Role

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking a Part-Time Aquatic Specialist to join the team at Marion Diehl Recreation Center. This role involves developing and facilitating aquatic programs such as water aerobics, swim lessons, and other recreational activities. The position also includes providing in-service trainings to lifeguard staff, supporting pool deck operations, and fostering community partnerships. The schedule is approximately 29 hours per week, primarily consisting of evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and evaluate aquatic programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
  • Provide weekly in-service trainings to lifeguards.
  • Deliver customer service and handle funds through various channels (phone, email, website, social media, and in-person).
  • Ensure participant and spectator safety, administer first aid when necessary, and enforce rules and regulations.
  • Collect fees and registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Supervise children in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
  • Handle public inquiries and complaints.
  • Drive a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to different locations as needed.
  • Assist with department events and field trips.
  • Serve as the manager on duty on a regular rotation.

Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License with County Driving Privileges.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR/AED, Lifeguard Certification, and Starfish Instructor Certification within six months of hire.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree (or a combination of relevant experience and education).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • StarGuard/Starfish Instructor Certification and/or Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Experience delivering water aerobics and/or swim lesson programs.

Work Environment

Works indoors in environments with loud noises.

Schedule

Approximately 29 hours per week, primarily evenings and weekends.
