Part-Time Anthropology Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges:

• Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 – $130.94 per hour
• Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 – $151.07 per hour

Schedule

Semester assignments as needed; day and evening classes offered.

Responsibilities

• Teach courses in the Anthropology Department, including but not limited to:
  • Introduction to Archaeology
  • Introduction to Physical Anthropology
  • Physical Anthropology Laboratory
  • Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
  • Ethnographic Film
  • Archaeology Field Experience
  • Travel Study in Anthropology
  • Anthropology Work Experience
• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
• Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
• Perform other duties required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and institutional needs

Requirements

• Master’s or higher in anthropology or archaeology, or
• Bachelor’s in anthropology or archaeology and Master’s or higher in sociology, biological sciences, forensic sciences, genetics, or paleontology, or
• Equivalent qualifications (see below)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Equivalency Options

Applicants may demonstrate equivalency through one or more of the following:

• Degree Equivalence: Possess a degree(s) with similar content to those listed, where the degree title or coursework differs slightly. Equivalency is established through transcript analysis.
• Academic Background Equivalence: For disciplines where a Master’s is not generally expected or available, complete at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) in the academic field, plus:
  • A broad cultural education (e.g., general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree)
  • Detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor (e.g., coursework required for the degree major)
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Demonstrate equivalence to general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, and provide evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the field, such as:
  • Teaching experience
  • Work experience
  • Publications
  • Portfolios
  • Speaking engagements
  • Other relevant abilities

• Broad knowledge of anthropology courses and recent successful experience teaching anthropology at the college level
• Proficiency in using technology in teaching
• Commitment to the role and purpose of the community college

• Ability to use writing as an evaluative assessment tool
• Skill in developing teaching methods that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and active learning to foster independent, creative learners with higher-order thinking skills
• Ability to organize and explain materials for students with diverse abilities, preparation levels, and cultural experiences
• Ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and assess students’ achievement of these outcomes
• Ability to teach theoretical and practical applications of the subject matter in ways appropriate to students’ abilities
• Commitment to integrating writing skills across the curriculum

Work Demands

• Typical on-site office environment; in-person work expected with potential to participate in the District’s telework program
