Essential Functions
- Acts as the first responder to any threat or danger to staff, offenders, visitors, or the building.
- Visually inspects all persons entering ACJC and/or regional field offices and removes anyone who possesses a danger.
- Operates x-ray machine and hand metal detectors, as well as conducts pat down searches as deemed appropriate to ensure the person does not possess weapons, contraband and/or other illegal or prohibited items.
- Provides security and bailiff duties for assigned courtrooms.
- Notifies parties of hearing location and delivers juveniles to the appropriate courtroom.
- Calls cases to Court and issues personal property to parents/legal guardians.
- Affords assistance in taking juveniles and adults into custody per Court Order.
- Maintains distress panels and responds to distress calls.
- Responds first to medical emergencies in public areas and provides appropriate actions.
- Call 911 and escorts emergency personnel.
- Maintains weapon lockers in security office.
- Receives items for juveniles such as medication, glasses, retainers, HSE or stamp money, and provides receipts for items received.
- Manages office supplies and submits orders as needed; manages office equipment and notifies supervisor if maintenance needed; manages other supplies (drug testing cups and labels, cleaning products, etc.) and submits orders as needed; assists probation officers with day to day office maintenance which may require minor cleaning such as vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash, wiping down kitchen and/or bathrooms, etc.
- Performs all other duties as assigned or required by law, including overtime as required.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two years of policing, corrections and/or military training/experience
- Valid Indiana Gun Permit
- Ability to become certified in Defensive Tactics, OC Spray and Electroshock Weapons
- Valid CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
- Ability to become trained and sworn as a Special Deputy for the Allen County Sheriff’s Department
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply procedures, rules and regulations of the department in a practical manner to maintain effective court building security
- Knowledge of Criminal Justice System includes a practical knowledge of area law enforcement and court procedures to ensure compliance with policy and procedures
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deal with irritated, rude, frustrated people with tact and attempting to diffuse situations
- Treating people of different backgrounds with courtesy and respect
- Ability to write detailed reports based upon public disturbances and juvenile misconduct
- Ability to use pepper spray, handcuffs, handguns, x-ray machine, emergency restraint chair and other job-related equipment
- Strong computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office, as well as software programs Quest and Spillman
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- To pass a psychological examination by a Court designated psychologist
- Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, shredder, fax, printer, scanner and multi-line telephone system
- Ability to use OC pepper, handcuffs, handcuff key, portable breath test machine, handgun, electroshock weapon, Rapiscan x-ray machine, Garrett metal detector, emergency restraint chair and handheld radio
