About the role

The South Dakota Department of Corrections is hiring Parole Agents to manage a caseload of convicted felons on community supervision, develop working relationships with community placements and resources, and conduct special investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of convicted felons on community supervision
  • Develop working relationships with community placements and resources
  • Conduct special investigations to promote the reform and redirection of persons under community supervision while ensuring the safety of society
  • Successfully complete the six-month training period and show proficiency in Safety Training, Case Management, and Evidence-based practices
  • Represent DOC and the Parole Division when collaborating with community partners and law enforcement entities
  • Document logically, accurately, and concisely pertinent information and decisions
  • Communicate information clearly and accurately
  • Manage time to meet policy-required deadlines
  • Interact with persons under community supervision and others to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with them
  • Maintain impartiality in dealing with persons under community supervision
  • Make educated and swift decisions regarding the appropriate response to caseload challenges

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or four years of related experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Principles, methods, and procedures to facilitate an acceptable reintegration and/or continued adjustment of persons under community supervision
  • Attitude, problems, and behavior of offenders under community supervision
  • Human behavior and interpersonal relationships
  • Basic terminology and concepts of corrections and community supervision
  • Legal terminology and procedures
  • Chemical agents, restraints, and basic firearm safety and firearm techniques
  • Individual counseling techniques
  • Ability to represent DOC and the Parole Division when collaborating with community partners and law enforcement entities
  • Ability to document logically, accurately, and concisely pertinent information and decisions
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and accurately
  • Ability to manage time to meet policy-required deadlines
  • Ability to interact with persons under community supervision and others to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with them
  • Ability to maintain impartiality in dealing with persons under community supervision
  • Ability to make educated and swift decisions regarding the appropriate response to caseload challenges

Qualifications

  • Pass a polygraph examination, background investigation, and UA before final appointment
  • Successfully complete the six-month training period and show proficiency in Safety Training, Case Management, and Evidence-based practices
