About the role

Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, operates various pieces of construction type equipment in the process of maintaining parks, trails, public rights-of-way, buildings, and properties. Performs a variety of tasks from general maintenance of buildings, cemeteries, cemetery burials, athletic fields, landscaping, lawn care, weed control, sidewalks, community pool and catch basins. Operates equipment in the removal of snow, ice and the loading and spreading of various types of materials related to work assignments. Performs maintenance of turf and golf course landscaping. Performs general maintenance, minor repairs, cleanup of equipment. Works to maintain and repair equipment and machinery at the Parks and Cemetery garage. Performs other related activities as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Operate construction equipment (dump trucks, backhoes, etc.) for park, trail, and right-of-way maintenance
  • Maintain buildings, cemeteries, athletic fields, landscaping, lawns, and sidewalks
  • Perform cemetery burials and related tasks
  • Conduct weed control and landscaping for turf and golf courses
  • Remove snow and ice; load and spread materials
  • Perform general maintenance, minor repairs, and equipment cleanup
  • Maintain and repair machinery, including industrial pumps, motors, and compressors
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues using basic mechanics and electrical knowledge

Requirements

  • High school graduate or G.E.D.
  • Four (4) or more years of routine operation and maintenance of dump trucks, backhoes, and related equipment
  • Experience in repair of machinery and equipment, including industrial pumps, motors, and compressors
  • Working knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in machinery operation and maintenance
  • Good driving record at time of appointment
  • Valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire
  • Ability to operate job-required equipment as mandated by State law

Physical Demands

  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, talk, and hear
  • Squat, stoop, or kneel as required
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
