About the role

This position involves manual labor and equipment operation and repair related to maintenance and upkeep of parks, athletic fields, ice rinks, pools, playgrounds and playground equipment, and park trails. It also includes the maintenance of park lawns, trees, shrubs, and plants; seeding, sodding, and planting; mowing and aerating; trimming, transplanting, and removing trees and plants; weed control; routine welding, preventive maintenance; and plowing pathways and parking lots.

The position requires availability for extended work days, weekends, call backs, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies as required of the City's maintenance divisions. This position is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and well-functioning aquatic facilities, including the ability to test and balance pool water chemistry, clean filters and strainers, inspect pumps, heaters, and related equipment, and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all tasks, functions, and duties assigned to the parks maintenance division, including but not limited to: equipment operation, manual labor, operating mowing equipment, forklift operations, backhoe operations, and snowplowing.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation systems within park system; installs and constructs athletic fields, ice rinks, playground and related equipment, and park trails.
  • Care and maintenance of park lawns, trees, shrubs, and plants, including but not limited to: preparing grounds for seeding, sodding, and plantings; laying sod; seeding; mowing and aerating lawns, golf courses, street borders, field, and ditches; performing tree trimming; transplanting trees, shrubs, and other plantings; and removing trees and plants.
  • Mixes and applies chemicals to prevent or control turf, tree, shrub, or plant disease.
  • Constructs, maintains, repairs and installs signs.
  • Performs snowplowing functions for the City, including but not limited to: operating snowplow equipment; sanding and salting; operating snowplow wings, and performing general repairs to equipment.
  • Performs maintenance functions of all public accesses, including but not limited to: weed control, tree removal, tree pruning, and shrub removal.
  • Performs repairs of a routine nature to equipment; including but not limited to: welding repairs; routine oil and lubrication repairs; and other routine equipment repairs.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and regulations; follows safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
  • Assists all maintenance divisions and other departments, as directed, in the required maintenance of City-owned properties.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the tasks of the position as assigned by the City.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement or must obtain within six months of appointment.
  • Valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
  • Strong mechanical ability and skills.
  • Experience in routine care and maintenance of equipment, including demonstrated ability to perform mechanical repairs on large scale mowers and other parks maintenance equipment and vehicles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or education in greens industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirements: High school graduation or equivalent. Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement or must obtain within six months of appointment. Valid driver's license and excellent driving record. Strong mechanical ability and skills. Experience in routine care and maintenance of equipment, including demonstrated ability to perform mechanical repairs on large scale mowers and other parks maintenance equipment and vehicles. Demonstrated knowledge or education in greens industry. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a team. Demonstrated ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards. Requires compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT)/Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing program requirements.
  • Additional Minimum Requirements for Maintenance II Worker: 18 months of experience working in a municipal park's maintenance division, or equivalent experience as determined by the City. Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement. Computer aptitude and ability to work directly with parks maintenance software.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Strongly Preferred for current Vacancy: Experience in establishing and maintaining natural pollinator areas (prairies), buckthorn removal and the reestablishment of wooded areas, experience in flower bed design and maintenance, strong working knowledge of native and local plants, shrubs, and trees to enhance the parks natural beauty and ecological health. Also Preferred: Aquatic facility operator certification and work experience in aquatic facility operations. Playground inspector certification and/or pesticide applicator's license. Skill and experience in general construction, light carpentry, light carpentry, or other related skills. Degree or certificate in horticulture, turf management, or related field. Work experience in a municipal parks operation; lawn/nursery/tree/plant care; irrigation system repair; landscape maintenance; and/or athletic field maintenance.

Work Conditions And Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors.
  • Must be available for extended work days, weekends, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies as required of the City's maintenance divisions.
  • Main job functions require ability to perform physical activities including bending, twisting, gripping, carrying, and shoveling; lifting of up to 50 lbs.; working in confined spaces; use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, harnesses, and related equipment; ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.
  • Ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs. Ability to carry and operate various types of equipment.
