Schedule
4 days (10-hour shifts) per week with a ½-hour lunch
About the Role
Assists in performing a variety of entry-level duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, upkeep, beautification, and repair of parks buildings, cemetery, trails, parks grounds, and general environs.
Reports to the Parks & Cemetery Supervisor and/or Parks Technician Crew Leader. No supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Assists in performing daily maintenance of outdoor grounds facilities, park sites, pavilions, lawns, and garden plots by power trimming and mowing; cleaning and removing trash and debris from outdoor recreation sites; preparing recreation areas (e.g., softball fields) for public use.
- Performs grounds and play equipment construction; conducts safety inspections on play equipment in compliance with regulations to ensure liability mitigation.
- Assists in performing seasonal projects, including:
- Installing and repairing sprinkler systems and monitoring watering schedules.
- Beautifying landscape areas, creating new landscapes, seeding and sodding.
- Applying chemicals for weed control in turf and open spaces.
- Winterizing water lines, shoveling and sweeping snow (by hand or with a power blower) to clear parking areas and walkways.
- Assists in maintaining public facilities for the City, including cleaning, securing, and monitoring equipment/facilities; making repairs to equipment/facilities; and assisting with minor plumbing, carpentry, and basic repairs as necessary.
- Operates powered equipment such as trimmers, edgers, tractors, dump trucks, snow blowers, snow plows, chain saws, sod cutters, chippers, etc.
- Loads and unloads equipment and supplies necessary to complete assignments, such as chemical fertilizers, trash, lawn mowers, weed eaters, mulch, and topsoil.
- Assists in mixing and spraying or spreading fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
- Responds to emergency calls as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
- Valid Utah Driver License with a safe driving record.
Skills & Knowledge
- Some knowledge of:
- Horticulture, planting, cultivating, pruning, and general care for plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Application of pesticides, fertilization, and soil amendments.
- Drainage control, sprinkler system operation and maintenance (including pumps, various types of heads, automatic controllers, and weather stations).
- Maintenance of all grounds-keeping equipment.
- Reading landscape drawings and blueprints; installation of parks.
- Skill in operating heavy mechanized equipment as required by the position, including:
- Snow plow/salt spreader, track hoe, front-end loader, backhoe, bobcat, Kubota, trenching machine, welding equipment, etc.
- Ability to:
- Work weekends and holidays when needed.
- Maintain safe working conditions.
- Respond effectively and make responsible decisions in emergency or unusual situations.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Perform manual or strenuous physical labor on a limited basis.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Work Environment
- Primarily works outdoors; exposure to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions.
- May be exposed to:
- High, precarious places.
- Fumes or airborne particles.
- Toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Risk of electric shock.
- Physical activities may include:
- Walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, crawling, and lifting (25–100 pounds).
- Talking, hearing, and seeing.
- Eye, hand, and finger dexterity.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
