About the Role

As a Park Supervisor, you will oversee the supervision, management, and operation of one of the maintenance teams within the City's park system.

Responsibilities

  • Park Maintenance:
    • Perform and manage maintenance tasks including ball fields, dog park turf, trash collection and disposal, grass cutting, shrub trimming, edging, raking, sweeping, power washing, and painting.
    • Clean picnic tables, playground equipment, park office, trails, picnic shelters, and restrooms to ensure a safe, clean, and attractive park environment.
    • Conduct inspections of park amenities such as playgrounds, dog parks, volleyball/tennis courts, disc golf amenities, basketball courts, maintenance equipment, and facility buildings.
    • Inform supervisor of park maintenance and operational issues.
    • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure good condition.
    • Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and cleaning supplies.
    • Assist other city personnel with landscape maintenance, environmental projects, and volunteer group projects.
  • Supervision:
    • Supervise full-time and part-time staff, including hiring, scheduling, evaluating, and discipline.
    • Train park employees in the proper use of tools, utility vehicles, and grass-cutting equipment to ensure safety.
    • Monitor daily work assignments of staff, community service workers, and volunteers.
  • Park/Outdoor Facility Operations:
    • Oversee the overall supervision of assigned parks.
    • Enforce park rules to maintain a safe environment.
    • Assist with shelter reservations and work with event organizers conducting events and rentals.
    • Attend onsite meetings to ensure events are planned according to park design and capacity.
    • Monitor recreation equipment and amenities to ensure safe and correct usage by patrons.
    • Manage and operate dog parks, disc golf courses, and boat ramps, including enforcement of all rules and regulations.
    • Explain city and department policies regarding conduct on City Park property to violators.
  • Administrative:
    • Review and submit timesheets in a timely manner.
    • Assist with monitoring capital improvement projects.
    • Manage shelter reservations and monitor permits daily via the ActiveNet database.
    • Respond to public inquiries in person and by phone to maintain quality customer service.
    • Respond in writing to patrons and supervisors regarding incidents, accidents, and issues.
    • Assist with the preparation of work schedules and written performance appraisals for team members.
    • Prepare and submit work orders, inspection reports, and other reports using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license (a learner permit is not valid).
  • Must furnish and wear steel-toed safety boots.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and have a satisfactory background check.
  • Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Work schedules may be adjusted seasonally.

Additional Information

As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). Training is held from 8:30 AM–5:00 PM every other Friday at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. A hybrid version of the training may be available on weekends if an exemption is permissible.
