About the Role

This full-time exempt position performs corrective and preventative maintenance, construction, and repair of county parks, grounds, and equipment. Duties include constructing structures, pouring and finishing cement, painting, installing and maintaining water and irrigation systems, and performing basic electrical work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance at parks, including constructing porches, boat ramps, sidewalks, curbs, and signs.
  • Paint buildings, signs, tables, and fences; spread rock, soil, and bark mulch.
  • Install and maintain water, sewer, and irrigation systems; perform basic electrical work.
  • Repair playground equipment; clean boat ramps and restrooms; restock restrooms.
  • Provide groundskeeping and landscaping duties, such as planting, cultivating, mowing, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, and vacuuming/blowing grass and leaves.
  • Operate hand power tools and light to heavy equipment, including mowers, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, trenchers, sweepers, and loaders.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Move picnic tables and equipment between areas; provide garbage pickup for parks.
  • Winterize parks at season end; prepare parks for spring opening.

Requirements

  • Three years of progressively responsible work experience in park construction and maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and/or building construction, with experience in plumbing, irrigation, painting, roofing, cement work, electrical, and grounds maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance, irrigation systems, building and facility construction, and maintenance methods, principles, practices, equipment, and materials.
  • Reasonable knowledge of Oregon specialty codes governing building and plumbing construction.
  • Reasonable knowledge of operation, maintenance, and minor repair of assigned equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to safely operate power tools and equipment, communicate effectively orally and in writing, read blueprints and layout sketches, estimate time and materials, and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain recordkeeping, use problem identification and resolution techniques, remain calm in confrontational or high-pressure situations, and interact courteously with employees and the public.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license at time of appointment; regular and consistent attendance.

Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen, a post-offer medical and hearing exam, and a driving history review that meets Douglas County’s Driver Policy.
