About the Role

Our mechanics play a crucial role in the safe operation of our transit system, ensuring the safety of passengers who rely on transit for their daily commutes.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and replace brake systems, fuel and emission systems, drivelines, steering and suspension systems, passenger heating/cooling systems, etc., to ensure proper operating condition.
  • Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, precision instruments, HVAC recovery equipment, and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches and hydraulic presses.
  • Use diagnostic computer equipment and software, including programs such as Cummins Insite and Allison DOC.
  • Maintain and create records and work history within electronic repair orders.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance inspections and procedures (e.g., changing oil and filters, lubricating steering, suspension and brake components, battery maintenance, compressed natural gas tank inspections).
  • Test drive/operate light duty vehicles, trucks, buses, and support equipment to diagnose malfunctions or ensure proper operation.
  • Use in-ground and above-ground hoists, portable hoists, and hydraulic jacks to raise equipment for inspection and repair.
  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace protective guards, loose components, and specified safety devices.
  • Perform vehicle chassis alignments.
  • Replace, repair, and perform routine maintenance on internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel), transmissions, and differential units.
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, windows, interior and exterior trim, and hardware.
  • Install, diagnose, and repair/replace vehicle accessories.
  • Perform emission-related diagnosis and repairs.
  • Conduct minor fabrication, welding, grinding, and soldering.
  • Perform service calls on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist in training lower-level personnel.
  • Perform backfill supervisory duties as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Learn the design, maintenance, and adjustments of ADA equipment, air conditioning, brakes, chassis, cooling system, engine, interior/exterior lighting, gauges and controls, safety equipment, fire suppression systems, sensitive edges, tires, and transmissions.

Requirements

  • Evidence of a "safety first" attitude.
  • One (1) year of progressive heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
  • Two (2) years technical degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must have computer skills to repair sub-components of all types of buses and understand/follow schematics.
  • Intermediate-level computer skills (including Microsoft applications).
  • Customer-focused attitude with a high level of professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, establish trust and credibility, and act with complete integrity.
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, diligent, and able to operate independently with limited supervision.
  • Able to work in a team environment cohesively to ensure vehicle safety.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Sound judgment, good problem-solving, and analytical skills (troubleshoot technical issues, communicate and document solutions).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be flexible and work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Experience with diagnostic computer equipment and software required.
  • Hands-on experience in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Must provide own hand tools as necessary to perform assigned work.
  • Must pass Department of Transportation (DOT) pre-employment physical and drug screening.
  • No criminal convictions or DWI, DUI, assault, or possession of controlled substances within the last 5 years.
  • Must be able to complete and pass pre-employment performance evaluation, DOT physical, drug and alcohol screen, background investigation, and pre-employment assessments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one to two years of vocational/technical schooling or equivalent work experience.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class B with endorsements.
  • Available classifications based on experience and certifications:
    • Level C: Hiring level.
    • Level B: Must hold and maintain three ASE Truck or Transit Bus certifications along with 608/609 Air Conditioning Certification and three years of verifiable experience in heavy-duty diesel bus or truck.
    • Level A: Must hold and maintain four ASE Truck or Transit Bus certifications (one must be test T6 or H6 electrical) along with 608/609 Air Conditioning Certification and four years of verifiable experience in heavy-duty diesel bus or truck.
    • Master: Must hold and maintain ASE Certified Master Truck or Transit certification, 608/609 Air Conditioning Certification, demonstrate proficiency in arc, MIG, and gas welding, and have five years of verifiable experience in heavy-duty diesel bus.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to learn new programs as required.

Pay

$22.00/HR - $27.00/HR

Schedule

Sunday - Thursday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
