About the Role

Special Education Paraprofessional plays a vital role in supporting students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by working collaboratively under the supervision of a licensed special education teacher. This position focuses on academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support tailored to individual student needs. Paraprofessional plays a critical role in fostering student independence, inclusion, and safety across school environments. Some positions will assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and support for students with more complex needs. This may include bathrooming, feeding, transferring, non-skilled medical intervention, and AAC direction and prompting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support and services to students with IEPs as directed by the special education teacher.
  • Assist in delivering adapted lessons and academic interventions aligned with students' learning goals.
  • Implement behavior support plans and help reinforce appropriate behaviors using consistent strategies.
  • Supervise students during unstructured activities such as lunch, recess, or transitions to ensure safety and engagement.
  • Collect data on student progress related to academic, behavioral, and IEP goals, and report findings to the special education team.
  • Support students with accommodations and modifications in both general education and special education settings.
  • Collaborate with teachers, service providers, and school staff to meet the individual needs of each student.
  • Foster a respectful and supportive environment that reflects the values of inclusion and equity.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Para Licence Required

Required Skills

  • Experience working with children, preferably in an educational or special education setting.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, or pushing of materials and classroom equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, via phone, and through electronic means
  • Work is performed in classroom and outdoor settings with occasional off-site activities
  • May include exposure to emotionally intense situations or behaviors; proper training and support will be provided

Terms of Employment

186 days per school year (student contact days).

Evaluation: Performance evaluations will be conducted by the Building Administration in accordance with Hudson School District Board of Education policies.
