About the role
The paraprofessional works under the supervision of a certified staff member to assist students in the special education classroom. They help with education and social development, classroom assignments, and non-instructional tasks.
Responsibilities
- Assists and guides students individually or in small groups with education and social development.
- Administers classroom assignments and assessments under the guidance of professional staff.
- Prepares and differentiates instructional materials according to individual student needs.
- Completes Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training and maintains certification.
- Documents student learning, progress, and performance in data tracking systems.
- Supports classroom behavioral management and supervises various non-instructional areas.
- Assists with students' medical, grooming, and self-care needs.
- Accompanies students on field trips and assists with supervision.
- Fosters effective parent involvement in student education.
- Assists students with disabilities in all aspects of classroom instruction.
- Utilizes necessary student devices, such as AAC communication devices and mobility devices.
- Participates in the IEP process and supports the student evaluation team.
- Assists with students' activities of daily living to maximize their participation in school and learning activities.
- Follows safety rules and procedures for all students, including those with disabilities.
- Collaborates with teachers and related service providers to support students in the ASD program.
Qualifications
- Two years of study at an institution of higher learning (60 credits) or an associate's degree.
- Prior experience working with students with Autism.
- Training in proper classroom management techniques, including verbal de-escalation skills and physical interventions.
- Willingness to participate in professional development.
Skills
- Ability to carry out instructions and perform arithmetic operations.
- Use of personal computers and software applications.
- Confidentiality of student information.
- Establishing supportive and compassionate relationships with students.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
