About the role
Serve as a support to the classroom teacher in providing educational opportunities for each student.
Responsibilities
- Support teachers of students and work directly with students displaying unsafe and disruptive behaviors in the classroom and those referred out of the classroom.
- Serve as a member of the behavior team to implement positive intervention plans to improve student performance.
- Uses appropriate instructional strategies and techniques as prescribed by the appropriate personnel to support learning.
- Provide support to selected students in resource, self-contained and/or regular classroom settings.
- Aid and adhere to all elements of plans or accommodations as required by the IEP, behavior plan, healthcare plan, etc.
- Assist and maintain clear expectations for classroom rules, routines, procedures and enforce them consistently and appropriately; utilize positive behavior techniques to maintain appropriate student behavior.
- Perform special duties as required for meeting the unique needs of specific student populations; e.g., lifting physically disabled students, toileting/personal hygiene assistance, using physical restraints or other specialized behavior management techniques.
- Assist student/teachers in using hardware, software, and other technology including assistive technology.
- Provide ongoing feedback to the appropriate personnel regarding student performance including issues potentially impacting the student’s performance.
- Act as a resource in the development and implementation of specialized behavior intervention plans to teachers, staff and administrators for students with severe behavioral challenges primarily in the resource or self-contained classroom setting.
- Provide specialized training in classroom organization and management, academic and behavioral programming, utilizing established principles of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), for teachers of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Emotional Behavioral Disorders (EBD), and other developmental disabilities, from pre-K through high school.
- Provide trainings and on-going staff development in the area of ABA, including discrete trial intervention.
- Provide trainings in the administration of assessment measures such as the ABLLS-R and AFLS.
- Ensure compliance of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) Professional and Ethical Code for Registered Behavior Technician.
- Collect data on support provided to teachers and students.
- Maintain composure during stressful situations.
- Conduct small group or individual classroom activities based on lesson plans developed by the teacher.
- Aid in routine recordkeeping, as prescribed by appropriate personnel.
- Locate, operate and return needed equipment.
- Aid in classroom housekeeping.
- Aid in the supervision of students including classroom and school-wide supervision such as loading/unloading buses.
- Aid in the supervision of students including bus monitoring for travel to and from school-related activities.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Registered Behavior Technician Certificate or willingness to obtain and maintain RBT certification.
- Minimum one year experience with students with significant disruptive behaviors and/or Emotional Behavioral Disorders.
- Education level must be in accordance with federal, state and local guidelines; certification as mandated by the Professional Standards Commission.
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree, or passing of the GACE Ethics Assessment and GACE Paraprofessional Assessment required.
