About the role
Under the general supervision of the Calumet County Director of Special Education, assists the teacher in creating an educational program and classroom environment resulting in high levels of learning and personal growth of each student that will contribute to their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, with the philosophy and goals of the district.
Responsibilities
- Supports instruction to all students reinforcing the certified teacher’s lessons.
- Provides support to the teacher to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment.
- Aids instructional efforts of the teacher.
- Aids in planning and preparation for daily activities.
- Aids in presenting or reinforcing learning concepts to students, individually or in groups.
- Administers remedial lessons per certified teacher’s direction.
- Provides specialized attendant services as required by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and as directed by the teacher.
- Assists in administrative support and assistance for teaching staff.
- Prepares documents and correspondence including typing letters, memos, schedules, notices, tracking data and other miscellaneous items; photocopies documents; maintains files; and distributes items, as needed.
- Assists the teacher and administration in implementing policies and rules governing student conduct.
- Supervises students as directed by the teacher and/or the principal.
- Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
- Organizes the physical environment to ensure that the classroom is safe and supports the learning of all students.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Demonstrates professional conduct.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
- Develops and maintains trust and positive relationships with parents, students, and staff members.
- Serves as a positive role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
- Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
- Participates in in-service training and programs as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED required; one to two years of experience working with school-aged children; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
