Paraprofessionals report to the assigned special educator or Title I Coordinator under the direction of the building administration.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or completion of two years of college coursework, or passing the state qualification exam
  • Compliance with current legal requirements regarding certification and ESSA requirements

Reports to: Director of Student Services

Responsibilities

Implementation of Teacher-Planned Instruction

  • Implements plans created by and under direct supervision of a teacher, special educator, or related services provider
  • Monitors and provides assistance to students during classroom activities
  • Supports students using instructional modifications for lessons prepared by the class teacher or special educator
  • Checks for work completion and reinforces skills previously taught
  • Communicates with team members about a student's program and shares/receives information about student progress as requested
  • Records and charts data
  • Prepares instructional materials as provided by classroom teacher (e.g., graphic organizers, manipulatives)
  • Refers questions or concerns related to assessment of student progress, programming, or medical status to case manager or appropriate professional staff
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all student interactions, records, or achievement
  • Participates in professional development at both the local level and outside the community

Supervision of Students

  • Supervises students at lunchtime, playground, and recess
  • Supervises students' arrival and departure within contract hours
  • Supervises study groups and students during transitions

Behavioral and Social Support

  • Implements behavioral student support plans developed by teacher or team
  • Communicates with team members about a student's program and behaviors
  • Observes, records, and charts students' behavioral responses
  • Facilitates student interactions
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the special education case manager or Building Principal

Skills

  • Able to compose emails and utilize the email system for communication
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately interact with students of all ages, faculty, and administration

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk or hear
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include both close and far vision

  • Standard classroom/school setting
