About the role
The Instructional Paraprofessional works under the supervision of a Building Administrator and with direction from one or more teachers. Their main tasks include providing student assistance, assisting with teacher duties, and supporting the overall success of students.
Responsibilities
- Provide student assistance by administering, scoring, and recording achievement and diagnostic tests, and working with individual students or groups to reinforce learning.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work in collaboration with the teacher.
- Aid in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and instructional activities.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in oral communication.
- Help students with daily living and self-help skills in the library or media center.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills.
- Operate and care for various instructional equipment.
- Assist with the collection and distribution of instructional materials.
- Supervise testing and make-up work, and assist with record keeping and documentation.
- Support the teacher in meeting the social and emotional needs of students.
- Assist substitute teachers in the absence of the regular teacher.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Associates degree, at least 60 semester college credits, or passing scores on ParaPro exam.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of basic curriculum expectations, teaching strategies, and computer applications.
- Basic reading and computation skills, and appropriate oral and written expression.
- Thorough knowledge of English grammar and usage.
