ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.
  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities.
  • Escort students from room to room.
  • Toileting students is sometimes required.
  • Involves work with both special education and regular students.
  • Aid in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Supervise students during recess and lunch.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments.
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes.
  • Aid teaching staff in filing material and preparing paperwork.
  • Alert teachers to problems observed.
  • Might require supporting with toileting of students.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate’s (or higher) degree.
  • Successfully complete a paraprofessional assessment assessing content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing, and understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with job-related computer hardware and software applications.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, with occasional heavier lifting with assistance.
  • Close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sit, talk, or hear.
  • Stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Noise level in the work environment is typical of classrooms having school children.
  • The paraprofessional is responsible for the safety and well-being of students in his/her charge.
